Medical Air (as it is called in Hospitals), is Compressed Air which is supplied at minimal pressure of 400 kPa at terminal units. It is a gas mixture of Oxygen 20.9% +/-0.5%, balance is Nitrogen, which is purified to meet pharmacopoeia standard and is used as Medical Breathing Air in Hospitals.
Medical Air is used in Hospitals for Mechanical Ventilation, Neonatal Incubator Environment Control, Infant Resuscitation, General Anesthesia, Aerosol Drug Delivery, calibration of Medical Devices for application in respiratory therapy and Hyperbaric Treatments.

Compressed Air, used as a Power Source for operating the Surgical Power Tools in the Operating Rooms has been defined as Surgical Air 700 kPa (7 bar) and is supplied in the Hospitals as part of Medical Gas Pipeline System Installation.
Surgical Air 700 kPa, which was earlier known as “Medical Support Gas”, is never used as a “Breathing Gas” like Medical Air 4, but has been used for other, more utilitarian functions, that occur in the hospital, like driving surgical power tools or dental surgical power tools, blowing-off glassware & catheters, moving & braking medical supply pendant units in the operating room & ICUs, for pneumatic tourniquets, or for drying endoscopes, etc.

In Coaire’s Medical Air Plant Package air is compressed to the desired pressure which is then passed through a purification (conditioning) process to produce sterile Medical Air for use in hospital and healthcare facilities. Pneuzorb comprises of top bottom valve blocks and extruded aluminum twin chambers filled with desiccant, which dries the compressed air as it passes through. One chamber is drying, while the other chamber is regenerating using the Pressure Swing Adsorption Principle. The change over is automatic and controlled by the microprocessor-based controller.
A small amount of the dried compressed air is used to regenerate the saturated desiccant bed by expanding the dry air from line pressure to atmospheric pressure, removing moisture adsorbed by the desiccant and therefore regenerating the dryer.
A particulate cum coalescing filter is installed (optional) before the dryer. After filter cartridges are fitted integrally inside the towers with adequate freeboard space. According to an air quality requirement, suitable microfilter may be installed after the dryer.
Applications
Solid, Liquid and Oil contaminants available in atmospheric air, after compression pollute the compressed air to a considerable degree. These contaminants added with further substances originating from the compressor, pipelines, receivers and air hoses further affects the quality of air. This creates abrasive mixtures which cause damage and user end application machinery/ tools can go wrong.

In hospitals, Vacuum system is used in surgery and other medical function to provide suction. By this suction, doctors clear the airway of blood, saliva, vomit, or other secretions. These secretions are considered biohazard since these may contain bacterial contaminants and should be separated methodically to ensure safe exhaust of air to atmosphere.
